Online insurer Esure is to pilot an electronic location viewing system, or `eye in the sky' to provide staff with interactive images of roads and junctions, revealed a report.

Based on AcitveGo's imaging product, called ActiveSnap, the product will let claims handlers zoom in on aerial photographs of roads using their computers.

According to the report, Esure said the technology would be used for cases where distances, road markings and other static features are central to a claim.

The software allows cars to be placed onto the photograph in positions which replicate those of an incident, which Esure said would allow distances to be measured down to six inches.

The electronic location viewing system, or ELVIS, will dramatically cut the costs of investigating contentious claims relating to road traffic accidents, claimed the report.

Esure's head of claims, Gordon Hannah, said: "Hundreds of thousand of claims every year involve information about the physical layout of the world - whether it is road markings, the design of the junction, or the size of a flat roof.

"This technology will enable our staff to virtually `go there' from their desks and check the evidence.

"We believe this will provide clear information that can quickly resolve claims where small scale facts are key to the outcome."
