esure is to automatically increase the level of home insurance cover by 10% for households expecting babies, for no extra cost.

From 28 April 2004, the enhanced level of cover will apply from four weeks before to four weeks after the baby’s due date.

It said the move followed research which revealed that the average cost of essentials which expecting parents buy, or receive as gifts, totals over £1,500. For those expecting twins, the average cost increased to £2,000.

esure head of home insurance Nikki Sellers, said: “It's expensive enough having a baby, the cost of a cot, a pram, safety equipment, baby monitors, clothes and toys quickly mount up, without having to worry about your level of insurance cover.

“Unfortunately there are some cases where people can lose everything they own, so we're giving new parents a breathing space to reassess whether any changes need to be made to their policy as a result of a new family member.
