Motorcycle insurers and key biker brokers have begun giving double-digit discounts to bikers that take government-approved advanced rider training ahead of the scheme’s official launch next month.
Under the scheme, bikers taking lessons from approved Driving Standards Agency (DSA) instructors and achieving the two top grades may claim the discount from at least a dozen bike insurers.
This bonus will transfer between insurers like a no claims bonus and will be worth between 10% and 17%.
The DSA will officially launch the scheme in August and plans to hold a special day for insurers and brokers at its training centre in Cardington at the end of October.
The DSA says as many as 16,000 bikers could qualify for the discount every year. Demand could, however, outstrip supply as the DSA currently has only approved 30 instructors throughout the UK.
A further 90 have passed most of their course but are awaiting their theory tests.
More than 400 trainers are enrolled on the scheme.
