Insurers will be able to check an applicant’s driving history online
Motor insurance premiums are set to fall under government plans to put all driving records online.
As part of the MyLicence scheme, drivers will be able to view their driving history via the internet, while insurers and car hire companies will have access to accurate information about applicants.
The migration will be complete by mid-2015, as licence paper counterparts are phased out.
The Insurance Industry Access to Driver Data (IIADD) project was launched back in November by the ABI and the MIB in partnership with the DVLA and Department of Transport.
The ABI said the data hub would reduce fraud and lower premiums for honest customers by up to £15 as insurers and brokers would be able to check records at the point of application.
The system is expected to go live in June, with testing starting in February.
Aviva said the MyLicence project would help reduce the cost of fraud. “Validated data on driver information and convictions will bring benefits to the underwriting process, as well as assisting with reducing application and renewal fraud and improving the customer quote journey,” a spokesman said.
