Insurers refuse to cover modifications for wheelchairs
Many UK motor insurers “dodge” anti-discrimination laws by refusing to disabled drivers because they have modified cars, the Observer reports.
A search of policies offered by 115 insurers and brokers on Moneysupermarket.com, found only one willing to offer cover to a disabled driver with 25 years' experience and a five-year no-claims bonus.
- Ten insurers asked for more details
- Most declined to quote "at this time"
- 31, including MoreThan, said they would not quote on a vehicle with "modifications".
A spokesman at Moneysupermarket said: "All we do is provide the information to the insurer and they then decide whether to offer a quote."
Confused?
On Confused.com, only 12 out of 80 insurers were willing to offer insurance online.
Will Thomas, head of car insurance, said: "[Insurers] need to be educated that disabled drivers pose no higher risk than anyone else."
Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
