Direct Line to offer a 5% discount to Tesla drivers with the semi-autonomous Autopilot feature
Direct Line are offering Tesla drivers a special 5% discount if they have the new ‘autopilot’ feature fitted.
According to GlobalData, the vehicle manufacturing industry is undergoing technological change leading to advances in vehicle safety that insurance premiums have yet to fully recognise.
GlobalData outlined Tesla as a case in point, saying the automotive and energy storage company is “at the forefront of these technological advances, with one of the most revolutionary being its autopilot feature.”
Tesla claims that “through the use of ultrasonic sensors and cameras which provide a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings, vehicles are able to match the speed of the surrounding traffic conditions, keep within a lane, change lanes automatically, exit a motorway when required, and even park themselves, all without the need for input from the driver.”
But the feature has suffered problems, after a man was killed while using the semi-autonomous system. A report found that he kept his hands off the steering wheel despite receiving many warnings not to do so. The car may not always be able to change lanes automatically and exit a motorway without the need for the driver. AXA technical director David Williams has previously issued a warning over “driverless” car marketing and the public perception of automated vehicles.
Nevertheless, Daniel Pearce, financial analyst at GlobalData said: “Crash rates across all Tesla models have fallen by 40% since the introduction of the autopilot system, illustrating how this technology has significantly improved the safety of driving. However, when owners seek to insure their Tesla vehicles, this is not reflected in the pricing of premiums.’’
In the UK, Tesla is collaborating with Direct Line to provide information on the capabilities of each model.
Dan Freedman, head of motor development at Direct Line Group said:
“Direct Line is collaborating with Tesla to understand the role advanced technology and driving aids can play in enhancing road safety, and therefore insurance.
“With Autopilot, we offer a 5% discount to customers that have selected the Autopilot feature on their Tesla car. We offer this discount to encourage customers to share this information with us to help our understanding of the points mentioned above.”
