Consultants hired to help insurers to meet database deadline by January 2005

The ABI and Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) are to employ consultants to advise on how the industry can speed up data transfer to the motor insurers' database (MID).

The move follows concerns that motor insurers will not be ready to meet the January 2005 deadline of 95% compliance in updating the MID within 14 days on all new or revised motor policies.

MIB group chief executive Ashton West said: "There needs to be some research done. The MIB and ABI are in the process of instructing consultants to map current processes to understand where the blockages are to achieving the targets."

The consultants will work to streamline current processes of updating the MID with insureds' details, thus helping the fight against uninsured driving.

Currently insurers are only hitting about 84% compliance on updating the MID, with some insurers lagging well behind this figure.

From January the MIB will have the power to fine or effectively withdraw licences from insurers who do not hit targets. The organisation has already showed its determination to develop the integrity of the MID by reporting to the Crown Prosecution Service those fleet operators who are not compliant with information targets.

West said: "As soon as we report them they become compliant. That is all we are asking for, but we are not putting up with this anymore. We are raising the stakes."
