Travel insurers and marine liability underwriters are looking at a boatload of claims coming ashore from the P&O liner Aurora. It is understood that Fortis is P&O's insurer.
Hundreds of medical claims and potentially thousands of compensation claims could result from the stomach bug that plagued the ship.
Medical expense claims are almost inevitable as the 500 passengers who caught the 'noro' virus recoup the cost of treatment.
But potentially more expensive would be compensation claims for a ruined holiday if P&O is found to be liable. Passengers paid between £1,500 and £5,500 for their holidays.
Chairman of the Association of Travel Insurance Intermediaries Jonathan Buttery said: "It is not a major illness, but obviously it has had an impact on the enjoyment of people's holidays."
