There is evidence of widespread confusion about employers' liability insurance among sole traders, according to a new report from Royal & Sun Alliance's More Than.

In early 2005, legislation came into force that removed the obligation on sole traders who act as companies to take out EL insurance. However, almost three-quarters of the respondents to More Than's survey were still not aware of the regulatory change a year on.

Conversely, many sole traders were also unaware that they would become liable for EL insurance if they took on employees.
