The Co-operative Group and NFU Mutual have been named in a list of the world's top 300 major member-owned businesses.

The co-operative and mutual enterprises have been ranked in the first Global300 listing, with 15 British businesses included in the poll in total.

Co-operative, the retail and financial services giant which includes Co-operative Insurance (CIS), took top place sitting in eight position with NFU positioned at 114th.

Shaun Tarbuck, chief executive of the International Co-Operative & Mutual Insurance Federation, as well as of the UK Association of Mutual Insurers, said; "Global300 reminds us of the worldwide importance of mutual companies, which together hold twenty five percent of the global insurance market.

“In Britain, mutual insurers are a powerful force, with thirteen million policy holders and over £82bn in assets. We are very much a part of the future, not the past."

Global300, an initiative from the International Co-Operative Alliance (ICA), has revealed for the first time the economic importance of the top 300 enterprises, which between them share a turnover of close to $1,000bn.

Zen-Noh (National Federation of Agricultural Co-operatives) based in Japan, topped the list.
