Deputy PM hopes government will make announcement soon
Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg has said he hopes the government would announce the future of flood insurance soon, after coming under fire on the issue from Labour MP Rosie Cooper.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Cooper said: “The government promised to bring forward plans for a new deal on flood insurance in July, but my worried constituents are still waiting. When will this incompetent and out-of-touch government actually act on ensuring that ordinary families and businesses are protected from flooding—or will this be another broken promise?”
Clegg replied that the government was still in “very detailed” talks with the insurance industry, and added: “We are doing that work now. It is complicated work. It is very important work. We are devoting a lot of attention to it, and I hope we will be able to make an announcement in the not-too-distant future.”
The statement is an agreement that insurers will provide affordable flood cover for homes and small businesses in flood-prone areas provided the government spends a certain amount on flood defences.
The statement will run until 30 June next year, and no replacement has been agreed. The ABI does not want to renew the agreement as it believes that the statement was never designed to be a permanent solution.
