The MIB has seen a rise in the number of claims involving foreign vehicles.
The Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) said between 2004 and 2006 claims involving foreign vehicles rose from 17,032 to 19,621.
Accidents involving vehicles from Poland, Slovakia, and Lithuania have all seen significant increases.
Claims involving Polish registered vehicles have risen from 938 in 2004 to 3,132 in 2006.
Susan Beck, Head of Communications for the MIB said: "We are naturally very concerned by the increase in claims involving foreign vehicles. The MIB provides information on what to do if you are involved in an incident with a foreign vehicle, which is available on the MIB website. Insurers also offer advice and guidance to their policy holders in the event that they are involved in a crash with a foreign vehicle. There is a particular problem with articulated lorries where it is normal practice on the continent for the cab and trailer to have different registration numbers. If you are involved in a crash with a foreign lorry you need to take a note of both plates."
Beck added: "There are often long delays in processing claims when foreign vehicles are involved. MIB would like to see the development of instant access to European databases of Insurance Policies, to support UK enforcement authorities and to enable quick and effective claims processing to support UK citizens when they are involved in a crash with a EU registered vehicle."
