Cila has begun a "sweeping up" exercise among the UK's major loss adjusters to ensure their staff are Cila members before FSA regulation begins.
In a letter sent to heads of all UK loss adjusters last week, Cila said the FSA would expect customer-facing employees to be Cila members.
Cila executive director Graham Cave said: "We know that in certain loss adjusters there are Cila members working alongside non-Cila members. We want to make sure that, under FSA regulation, those staff who have to deal with customers are competent and qualified."
Cila said the companies must reply by 10 December. One senior loss adjuster said the timescale was far too short: "I think it is a good idea in practice, but we cannot respond in just one week."
