The development of core competencies for insurance professionals throughout the world was the focus for discussions at the annual meeting of the Institute for Global Insurance Education (IGIE) chaired by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).
Held in Singapore, the meeting was the first to be run by CII director general Dr Sandy Scott following his election as IGIE chairman in January.
Discussions at the meeting centred on the aim of promoting competencies for insurance professionals worldwide, establishing acceptable standards for the design and administration of international professional education in risk management and financial services, and recognising those individuals who have met established standards of knowledge and performance.
Scott said: "Inevitably the process will take time to complete properly as we must recognise each member's national and local market practices, procedures and regulations. Nevertheless the IGIE meeting was a useful opportunity for discussions.
"We are working towards common international standards which we would like to be able to take forward to the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and our discussions will continue at a follow-up meeting planned for September."
The IGIE is a group of not-for-profit organisations concerned with education and training for insurance professionals worldwide.
