Car thieves are increasingly targeting keys. Stolen vehicle recovery specialists, Tracker, indicate that in 90% of the cases dealt with by the company, thieves have stolen the keys first.

In 1999, car-key thefts accounted for only 20% of vehicles recovered by Tracker. The indications in early 2006 are that the proportion is set to increase further.

Tracker marketing manager, Parita Patel, said: “In our experience, the issue of car-key theft is at an all-time high. It does need to be stressed to motorists that if they do not want the risk of having their vehicle stolen, then they do need to keep their keys secure and out of sight.”
