AA Travel Insurance has urged those going on snowboarding holidays to take proper safety precautions.

It said independent research had revealed that snowboarders were more likely to suffer a fracture than skiers. The most common injury suffered was a broken wrist, said the AA.

AA head of travel insurance Dale Clements said: "While travel insurance can save the financial pain of getting medical treatment and perhaps pay for an earlier than planned journey home, a good yet inexpensive wrist guard could save you the agony of a fracture and help ensure you enjoy your holiday to the full."

Clements also said many boarders were relative newcomers to winter sports and were more likely to take risks, such as such as boarding off-piste. This was not only highly dangerous but was also specifically excluded by most winter sports insurance, added Clements.

"A little common sense will go a long way towards a happy and trouble-free holiday."
