A new Flood Protection Association (FPA) will work alongside the Environment Agency and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to increase the profile of flood defences.

The Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have also backed the venture.

The association will introduce a formal accreditation for flood protection products such as floorboards, sealants, skirting systems, airbrick covers and demountable barriers.

ABI household and property deputy manager Gemma Hawes said the ABI welcomed the FPA's formation.

"The ABI believes it's crucial that property owners in flood risk areas benefit from flood protection products that are known to effectively reduce the impact of flooding," she said.

The FPA's first general meeting was held recently and testing of products is expected to start in the autumn.
