British Airways staff who indulge in adventure sports will have to take out their own personal insurance after the airline decided to withdraw cover following a spate of accidents.

BA insurance claims manager Gordon Simpson said the airline supported light exercise between flights, but that hazardous sporting activities were not compatible with duty travel, said a report.

A spokesman for BA said accidents involving flight crews could have serious knock-on effects for travellers.

The airline will continue to provide insurance for death and personal accidents, medical expenses and personal liability.

According to a report, Simpson said the airline would continue to provide cover for staff while they are on company business, but it felt that it could not continue to provide insurance cover for staff undertaking dangerous activities on their own time.

Excluded activities include potholing, cave diving, jet-skiing, hang-gliding, rafting, quad-biking, parachuting, abseiling, paragliding and bungee jumping, said the report.
