Aviva has announced that it will create 2500 jobs in India during 2004 to service the group's UK and Canadian businesses.
The 2500 jobs comprise:
· Approximately 350 call centre roles,
· Approximately 2000 back office administration, processing and IT roles, and
· Approximately 150 administration roles to support Aviva's Canadian general insurance business.
Aviva said it would have approximately 1200 staff in India by the end of 2003. The moves outlined in today's announcement will increase this number to 3700 by the end of 2004.
It said 80% of the Indian jobs would be accommodated in the UK by current vacancies, anticipated staff turnover and voluntary measures.
Compulsory redundancy for some employees could not be ruled out, said Aviva, although it will aim to accommodate the majority of the remaining roles, around 500 jobs, through redeployment within the group.
It said there would be no compulsory job losses in Canada as a result of the offshoring. Aviva has set aside £1.5m to provide career advice and support for those staff affected by the changes.
The 2350 jobs relating to the UK general and life insurance business will service Norwich Union. The 350 call centre roles will be based in Aviva's call and claims processing centres in Delhi and Bangalore. They will primarily deal with motor and household insurance inquiries.
The 2000 back office roles to support the UK general and life insurance business will be based in Bangalore, Delhi and Pune.
Aviva chief executive Richard Harvey said: "Making decisions that will affect our staff is always tough, but by taking action to remain competitive we will secure a long-term future for our business and therefore the majority of our people.
"Through our UK-wide redeployment process staff will have the best possible opportunity to find other roles within our group that match their skills."
