Aviva is poised to name former Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) chief executive John McFarlane as its next chairman.

McFarlane, who currently sits on the board of RBS, will end Aviva’s 10-month hunt to replace outgoing chairman Lord Sharman.

McFarlane’s appointment is expected to be announced in the next few weeks once FSA approval is given, according to reports.

Sir Richard Broadbent was favourite to land the job last month, but took the chairman’s seat at Tesco instead.

McFarlane ran ANZ in Sydney for 10 years, during which time he was praised for restructuring the company and improving performance.

He was tipped to take over from Sir Tom McKillop as RBS chairman in 2008, when the bank was close to collapse following the financial crisis.

He still has a number of non-exec positions, including at RBS, Westfield Holdings and Old Oak Holdings.

He will join Australian-born Trevor Matthews at Aviva, after the Friends Provident veteran was appointed UK chief executive on Friday.

It followed the news that Mark Hodges was named the new chief executive of Towergate.
