Supermarket chain Asda has launched a trial of pet insurance in 40 UK stores, underwritten by Allianz Cornhill.

The product will only be available for cats and dogs. Asda said it expected the average monthly premium for a dog to be around £9 a month, and under £6 for a cat. The policy will offer a maximum of £1,500 in cover for vet bills for each illness or injury.

News of the pet insurance trial follows soon after Asda's life insurance trial and the launch of motor, home and travel insurance products available at all its UK stores, underwritten by Norwich Union.

The motor, home and travel policies are already available online, with the pet and life products expected to launch on Asda's website next year.

Asda director of financial services David Rutley said the trial was part of the company's plans to offer a wide range of financial products.
