Bermuda reinsurer Ariel Re has been tipped as a frontrunner to buy Lloyd's insurer Talbot, according to senior sources.

A UK-based company is also thought to be making strong advances.

Ariel Re, one of the Class of 2005 start-ups, led by industry veteran Don Kramer, underwrites property, marine and energy and professional risks business.

According to a Towers Perrin Bermuda news update, Talbot was put up for sale for an estimated £200m ($390m) by its private-equity owners, Black Diamond Group, run by former Equitas director Heidi Hutter, Olympus and Reservoir Capital Group.

Both Talbot and Ariel declined to comment.
