Arag Legal Services is aiming to push into the top five legal expense insurers (LEI) "in the next few years".

It follows the announce-ment of the acquisition of the business portfolio of Knebworth-based ULR.

The deal will give the new business, Arag ULR (Knebworth), access to 170 brokers throughout the UK and underline the German-owned insurer's entry into the country.

Tony Buss, managing director of Arag, said: "This agreement not only provides an excellent platform for establishing the Arag brand in the UK , but also delivers a much wider product range to a very loyal supporting agency base."

ULR will cease to exist from January, when its managing director, Steve Donovan, and development manager, Barry Tweddle, join Arag.

Meanwhile, there are plans for Arag to bolster its growth by expanding into commer-cial lines.

The company has not ruled out further acquisitions.

Company chairman, Johannes Kathan told Insurance Times: "We have the ability to launch with a long term view, which makes us different from our competitors.

"It is really time for an alternative [LEI provider] to come into the market and offer something different.

"We want to grow at a speed which will enable us to continue providing a (high) quality of service."
