NFU Mutual and police say high meat prices lead to thefts

Animal rustling in Britain has become big business, driven by high meat prices and the recession, the Times reports.

Thefts include 500 piglets and 2,000 game birds.

Tim Farmer of Insurer NFU Mutual is quoted as saying: “Last year it was oil. The year before it was scrap metal. Thieves are quick to switch to something valuable.”

Staffordshire Police chief inspector David Bird says: “We are seeing rustling on a more commercial basis.”
