The body for amusement parks is lobbying for a "rider responsibility" bill, claiming it will lead to fewer accidents and lower premiums.

The British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions (BALPPA) is speaking to ministers about its proposed Amusement Rider and Liability Act.

BALPPA says a "rider" - a person aged 14 or older - has a duty to "obey the posted rules or oral instructions of amusement rides".

Colin Dawson, BALPPA chief executive, said: "More [rider] responsibility is necessary. A further benefit would be a reduction in insurance premiums."

David Bromilow, risk control consultant for insurer SLE Worldwide, which supports BALPPA's stance, said: "There are good safety standards in the UK, but we must ensure good risk management and avoid false claims."
