American Express Insurance Services has launched an insurance policy for those looking to take a gap year during a break from studies or work.

According to the company, annual travel insurance is usually not suitable for those wishing to take a gap year or extended break as annual policies are designed to cover frequent multi trips. Gap insurance covers travellers taking prolonged trips.

The news comes after the foreign office has claimed that one in four ‘gappers' would describe their travelling experience as ‘bad'.

Joanne Field, marketing manager, American Express Insurance Services, commented: “The Foreign Office's comments underline that whilst organising insurance may not be the most exciting element of planning a gap break it is one of the most important. Not all policies are the same and it really pays to do some research rather than just opting for the cheapest policy available.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
