Allianz says contract with breast implant maker is invalid

Breast implants filled with silicone

Allianz says its contract with the French breast implant maker at the centre of an international scandal is invalid.

Allianz insured Poly Implants Protheses SA between 2005 and 2010, but said the contract is void because the firm gave false information, Financial Times Deutschland reported today.

Poly Implants Protheses (PIP) substituted medical-grade silicon with much cheaper industrial-grade silicon several years ago.

As a result, the rupture rate could be one in 10. Fazel Fatah, president of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, says all 40,000 UK women with PIP implants should have them removed.

Private clinics in the UK could have to mop up the £150m bill. Former Health Secretary Andy Burnham says their insurance policies should help cover the costs.
