I find myself in agreement with John Jackson's comments concerning loss adjusters having to strive for higher standards to remain on insurers' panels (3 October, Insurance Times). It's just that I'm not sure it's happening - at least fast enough.

In my area of expertise, weather claims, I have worked my socks off over the past decade trying to convince adjusters that they needed to sharpen their act - or face the consequences.

It's OK picking up the pieces after an event, but adjusters need to be showing insurers how to mitigate weather losses before they happen. They should be leading from the front with training programmes, warning services and improved verification methodology.

Until adjusters pick up the gauntlet and become pro-active rather than reactive, insurers will continue to view them more as `vultures' rather than as `samaritans'.
