The ABI expressed support for the government's renewed commitment to investment in flood defences and management.

ABI acting head of general insurance Jane Milne said: “The government's renewed commitment to an investment of at least £564m in flood management over the next three years is very welcome.”

She added: “This announcement marks an important step towards a robust and integrated approach to flood management. This is essential if the government's plans for growth in new homes like Thames Gateway are adequately protected from flooding.

“Insurers are playing a full part in improving flood management through the successful implementation of our Statement of Principles, which ensures that the vast majority of homeowners can get insurance against flooding, while setting targets for the government to improve protection against flooding.”

Milne made the comments as Environment Minister Elliott Morley launched a consultation on flooding and coastal erosion management.

The ABI said it welcomed the government's commitment to review its planning policy on flooding.
