UK crime has fallen steadily over the last five years, according to the ABI.

In its latest "Insurance Trends" survey the ABI found that the number of property and motor theft claims has fallen "sharply" over the last seven years.

However of concern to the ABI was the finding that 3.5% of UK households now experience burglary every year.

The level of property crime has fallen to 991,000 burglaries in 2001/2, it claimed. In addition the total amount of property claims fell from £746m to £496m.

As a result the average cost of claims rose by 16.5% from £1019 to £1220. An ABI statement said: "The only reason for this can be that the number of claims has fallen."

The survey found the trend in non-commercial vehicle crime was also downward, with crime 40% lower than in 1995. As a result, the number of claims has fallen by over 11% in the same period.

The ABI report concluded: "Over the same time frame the average cost of a claim has fallen by 9%."

Identifying potential risk areas the survey reported that single parent households were most at risk, followed by under-24 households.
