A new volcanic ash cloud from Iceland could reach parts of the UK by the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Met Office has stated.

Airlines have been warned the ash could force the authorities to shut airports and close UK airspace.

However experts said the wind patterns were changeable and the cloud could be swept away from the UK.

The Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland is experiencing its largest eruption in 100 years.

Icelandic air traffic control has created a no-fly zone around the volcano, closed Keflavik airport, the country's main hub, and cancelled all domestic flights, the BBC reported.

It is almost exactly a year since the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, closing airspace across Europe.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) estimated the cost of the disruption to travel insurers at around £62m.
