Legal and General was founded in 1836. Other milestones include:
1919 – non-life business written for the first time
1920 – fire and accident office opens

Biography:
John Castagno has been managing director of Legal and General HealthCare since September 1999, and became managing director of Legal and General in January 2000. He joined the company in March 1999 as marketing director (protection), from Thomas Cook where he was development director for Global Traveller Services.
Before working for Thomas Cook he was general manager of marketing for Bupa where he was responsible for product and business development as well as market and competitor intelligence.
He has experience of the broader financial services issues and insurance industry having worked for Aetna, Liberty Life and Eagle Star in various capacities ranging from strategic marketing and customer services.
He is responsible for managing the development of Legal & General's range of personal lines and healthcare products
